Broughton Community Transport
The aim of the Broughton Community Transport scheme is to provide a fully accessible minibus for the people of Broughton-in-Furness and the surrounding areas. The scheme arose following the Kepplewray Project being approached by Cumbria Rural Transport, a part of Voluntary Action Cumbria, to consider managing a community transport scheme. After several meetings, including two public meetings, a steering committee was formed in January 2002 and subsequently an application for Grant Aid was successfully achieved from the Countryside Agency for 75% of the total cost.
Broughton Community Transport is comprised of local community groups, including the Methodist Church, Crusaders, Youth Club, the Old Kings Head, Broughton School and others, along with, of course, the Kepplewray Project, who have been
delegated to manage the scheme.
Many local people are isolated because of the limited public transport system, particularly the young and elderly. Establishing an affordable (group membership £20 per annum and 60p per mile hiring fee), fully accessible and flexible community transport scheme will assist in improving the mobility of several local groups. Accessing more easily public services, such as hospitals, libraries etc and visiting theatres, art galleries and sports events in the wider region will bring real benefits to local people.

(representing older members of the community), Daniel Leighton, Claudia Blaud and Bethany Mullen (children at Broughton School).
