"In the special, caring atmosphere of K, pupils have found that a physical difficulty or some other disability does not mean that a person is different or in some way less of a person." - Geoff Gedling (Trustee and Ex-teacher)
“The beauty of Kepplewray’s philosophy is the way it raises a person’s self-esteem; it emphasises what you can do, not what you can’t!” - Jackie Thomas (Head of a special school) |
We offer a wide selection of disability
related training courses to the voluntary, statutory and business sectors. Individual programmes are designed to meet your specific
requirements.
The promotion of the ‘Social Model’ of disability is central to ALL of our
training and the use of DVD's, powerpoint presentations, group work, discussion and the sharing
of experience are some of the techniques employed.
Our courses in greatest demand are:
DDA courses look at the legal definition of disability, various models of disability, the Law and its implications for employers/service providers and reasonable adjustments that can be made.
Disability Awareness Training courses consider
issues of language, how disabled people are included or excluded by society and
offers practical guidance on meeting the needs of disabled people as service
users or employees.
Fees include initial programme consultation and course materials, but do not
include travel expenses or accommodation. They start from £600 per full day.
A reduction for voluntary organisations may be negotiated.
Ideally the number of participants on any of our courses is between 10 and 20.
All training premises must be able to provide either a projection screen or a suitable area on which to project.
Courses can be run anywhere in the UK or at Kepplewray, if preferred, and we can
provide overnight accommodation and an activity programme.

Youth Inclusion Training
We have recently completed a pilot project to offer disability awareness training to young people in Cumbria. This project is aimed at encouraging young people to become part of the solution in tackling the exclusion of disabled people within their own communities and youth groups. Feedback from the pilot project is very encouraging. Despite initial wariness and even reluctance to be involved, the change in attitudes has been immediately noticeable to youth leaders. We now hope to be able to widen this to young people from all over the country.
"We didn't think people with special needs were such good fun." - Young person
"I thought young people with special needs were too vulnerable to openly display what would be considered normal behaviour for other teenagers - this weekend taught me the true meaning of equal opportunities"- Adult volunteer
If your youth group is interested in taking up this opportunity then please contact us.

" We were provided with a comprehensive report...each report included a summary which prioitised the suggested improvements and proved to be a useful guide for those of us who are not expert on disability access or buildings. I have high regard for the work which was undertaken by Kepplewray, they were extremely professional and provided very practical help and support to our organisation." - Colin Hendry, County Commander St John Ambulance. |
We offer a wide range of
access related consultancy services: Design Appraisal, Walk & Talk, Disability
Discrimination Act (DDA) Risk Assessment, Good Practice Assessment and Policy
Reviews. These are detailed as follows:
Design Appraisal
Our qualified and experienced staff in the field of disability will examine
design drawings and highlight areas where there may be a weakness in access
provision or where existing access arrangements could be improved.
Walk & Talk
Our Access Consultant will walk around your premises with you/your Senior
Manager and give general pointers as to how access could be improved followed by
a basic written report with key issues highlighted.
DDA Risk Assessment (Access Audit)
A DDA Risk Assessment looks at areas where you could potentially be challenged
under the DDA. Our Consultant will survey your property (the time/days involved
depends on the size and complexity of your property) and produce a detailed
written report prioritising any action you should take in order to prevent the
likelihood of a legal challenge.
Good Practice Assessment
A Good Practice Assessment follows the same basic procedure as a DDA Risk
Assessment but compares your property to current Good Practice Guidelines and
how it performs. Our recommendations are then made in accordance with Good
Practice to best meet the needs of those that use it and not simply the
requirements of the Law. We also work with you to develop an Access Plan (as
recommended by the DDA Code of Practice) so that improvements can be phased, in
order to minimise upfront financial commitment.
Policy Reviews
Our policy reviews look at your existing organisation/company policies and
suggest ways they could be amended to be more inclusive toward disabled
employees and users of your services.
