The Lakeland Guide

Mountains above Broughton Mills

Chris Berry worked for fifteen years as the National Park Ranger, covering the area that encompassed Broughton, Broughton Mills, Dunnerdale, Eskdale and Wasdale. During this time he gained an intimate knowledge of the local area, its wildlife, its history and its people.

Prior to coming to the Lake District, he worked on the East Coast of Yorkshire at Spurn and Flamborough Heritage Coasts and before that as a Countryside Ranger in Sherwood Forest.

His work involved the conservation of wonderful pieces of countryside, but the most important aspect of his work, he believes, was helping people from all walks of life to appreciate and enjoy their countryside.

Chris has now decided to go “freelance” and has set up The Lakeland Guide, which offers people the opportunity of taking a walk or tour with a local guide.

Chris lives just up the road from Kepplewray in Woodland and is available to take groups out from Kepplewray, on walks or tours tailored to match the needs of your group. So if you wish to be guided around the fells and valleys of the local area or if you have an evening or part day that you want to make the most of in the area around Broughton, get in touch and sort out an activity which your group will treasure as part of their visit to the Lake District.

Here are just a few ideas for walks and activities:-

Railway Rambles – Stroll along the Cumbria Coastal Way to Kirkby Green Road Railway Stations and then ride back on the train.

Broughton Railway Line – Take a walk up this old railway line and open your senses to the natural world. Accessible for people with limited mobility.

Early morning bird call – Get up early and discover the dawn chorus! Let Chris take you on an early morning walk to discover the birds which are already awake and singing their little heads off!

Finding your way around – Chris has years of experience in helping people to find their way around the countryside. On this activity he’ll start at the very beginning, with where you can go, maps and then on to compass work. This will give you confidence to get out there and discover the Lake District for yourselves.

All these activities are adaptable to the level of your group and above all else, friendly and fun!
